iA Writer App Reviews

Has gotten much worse over time

The old version of the app with the 4 writing methods was brilliant, but all of that is gone with the most recent version. Nothing to keep me using it anymore.

Workflow, seriously?

I spent almost 18EUR for something that doesn’t work. Do you guys have any idea what is all about with „workflow” feature? Because I dont.

the best writing app on mac

I use this app for almost all writing activities except Facebook messenger. I am using it every time when i need to write something longer than 4-5 sentences - it’s really great, not only for the long forms like blog posts, but also for long emails when you need to clarify your points. The focus mode as well as syntax mode is quite helpful to find out overused words like adjectives or nouns, which makes you look more clever. If you are writing long emails, blog posts, or any longer text that needs to be clear to your reader, this app is perfect for you. I used this app to write this review. Hope this helps.

Best Editor

Awesome! With iOS app double awesome. Just can’t live without it! :)

Ultimate Writing Experience

iA Writer is beatiful. If you have lots of money, you can stop reading here and buy it. Oh, you’re still there. So let’s quickly go through another adventages of this app. It supports Markdown - it’s probably the simplest and the best method to write blog posts. It has very user-friendly workflow (Note, Write, Edit, Read). It has Syntax, wich allows you to concentrate on what you write in that very moment. It has a quick export option, wwhich supports HTML, PDF, RTF or DOCX. It also has a beatiful Night Mode, and looks awesome in full-screen. Reasuming - iA Writer Pro is definitely worth your money. Better could be only Ulysses, but it’s far more expensive too. Go ahead, buy iA. You won’t regret it.

FRAUD

How to call situation where dev is selling two apps, and than make it one and call it upgrade? That is what they made with Writer PRO - I have bought it for workflow functions, and now I dont have Writer PRO but iA Writer. Maybe its an upgraede in your opinion but from my perspective its just fraud. You didnt gave me option to choose - new version its simplier version of Writer PRO. I want refund or downgrade to PRO

disappointed

Why? You broke really good app. Now its pro lite with strange functions and ugly interface. I want previous version back now. And I dont want complete change of everything with each new update. Have you ever heard of habits? Dont recommend this dev.

So called ‘upgrade’ was a mistake.

Please bring the old version back.

Great update to great application

Streamlined, polished, with first-class preview (finally), without document “stages” (useless by my opinion)

Great app with one exception

Love the simplicity and overall feel. But there’s just one drawback: your awesome font is not available in Russian.

Constantly freezes and crashes

Ive been using IA writer as my main tool for writing down ideas for all my projects for a long time. I use iCloud library. Recently the app started freezing all the time, it stops responding now and then and it crashes sometimes. I dont know what happened, but I cant rely on it anymore, its not a fast text editor — its an app that takes forever to set going to start writing.

Nice idea, but...

Not ready for “prime time”. The app feels like betaware with various key features missing (Dropbox sync, printing formatted text, properly functioning Syntax highlighter, etc.). I’m assuming it’ll get better as it gets updated, but asking nearly €40 for this “suite” (Mac + iOS) based almost solely on marketing hype is a bit of a slap in the face. I give the app(s) three stars purely for the potential I can see in the concept and for the superficial design polish. However, I’d definitely recommend waiting for a few updates to drop before plunking down the cash for these pricey-- *ahem* *cough* *cough*... “pro” apps.

Perfect tool for writers

This is a tool that help writers write better. That’s it. And it does his work extremly well. Negative reviews are from people who are not writers, because iCloud and not Dropbox sync for a writer is not an issue. And the price is cheap if compared not with the tech specs, but with the results it help you to get.

useful but needs improvements

The sych with iPad doesn’t work well. Some changes made on iPad have been lost when I opened iWrite on my MacBook. Moreover the characters and words counter has disappear. Why? It was very useful.

Money wasted: iCloud and Dropbox don’t sync! EDITOR’S CHOICE UNRELIABLE

I already had the iPhone and iPad version, and I bought the Mac version to be able to move from iPad to Mac. Astonishingly, Dropbox and iCloud both do not work. Just few examples. 1) I save a file on dropbox (or iCloud) on iPad The file should appear on mac, right? It doesn’t! Even after 30 mins (maybe forever). However, astonishingly if you create a directory on Dropbox, the directory is created... 2) No way to move files inside subfolders on Mac 3) On Dropbox the workflow does not work. My money has been stolen. The Editor Choice: we cannot rely on it!! They should cancel the recommendation from the app.

Great update in the good iA Writer tradition

Although technically an update of Writer Pro, the new app is more in line with the original iA Writer. It keeps some of the enhancements of the Pro version (such as syntax analysis, which isn’t for everyone but won’t bother you if you don’t use it), while getting rid of features that, in my opinion, made Pro annoying to the point of being unusable. I’m talking, specifically, of the assumptions Pro made about the writing workflow, which resulted in a specific file-system structure. Happily, there’s no more of that. You can now organize your iA Writer folder in iCloud any way you like, and the very handy in-app library will pick it up, no matter whether you’re on iOS or Mac. Also great is the ability to split the window between the edit mode and the preview mode, and adjust the width of each pane. Combine that with El Capitan’s split-screen mode, and you now have a very versatile writing workspace.

Seems alright, I liked the first one better

For some reason the spell check never runs automatically, you have to manually start it. Did they do that on purpose?

Perfect for shorter works

I tried iA early in the game, liked the attitude and approach of the developer perhaps more than the app itself. Consequently, I kept it around but didnt rely heavily on it. Now, with iA3, it hits the sweet spot. My workhorse still is Scrivener, but for shorter work, brief stories and essays, this is now my go-to place.

How to become average

This app used to be a great editor. Now they added library options and they broke the whole experience. The new features are pathetically buggy and not properly integrated on the design system. It’s a shame for the team building that product, they should be embarrassed about the last release.

Few options for text display

Unlike a popular competing app available for half the price, there is no choice of display font, and for the one you’re stuck with, it’s available only in three sizes. On a 12-inch Macbook Retina, the default size is too small to suit me, and the *one* available larger size is way too big to comfortably read on the screen. Font and text size options are sorely needed for this app to be worthy of a higher rating.
