iA Writer App Reviews

beautiful and minimal

I fall in love typing using it. It would be better to support LaTex. I am writing my dissertation with it, lots of greek letters and equations I have to type in Latex but couldn’t render them in iA.

Best Writing App Ever

I could never ever foucas on writing essays, and just daily things I like to write. This app helps me foucas, its the best app out there, and It’s really helped me. Beacuse I can’t stand bright light when I am writing, and this is just right with the Night View, and legit full screen. When I used Pages ’16, I was always brothered by the bright white, and grey - I could never get anything done. But now I can’t get things done, and foucas with the Night view, and legit. Totally worth the $19.99

Good, but maybe not for Novelists

I think the main thing I bought this for is “Syntax Control”. Sometimes I paste documetns from Ulysses into Wirter Pro, and run them through “Syntax Control”. I link my folder of Writer Pro (.md) documents up to my Ulysses Library under “External Folders”. Both apps sync in “External Folders” — changes and edits show up across platforms. My main bone to pick with Writer Pro is the lack of fundamental paragraph formatting. As a Novelist I need paragraphs to be indented and not spaced away from one another (i.e. block paragraphs). iA Writer Pro does not automatically indent, or export your writing in a format that resembles a novel writing manuscript . If you wish it to be formatted for submission, you can do so in a seperate app. Its “Work Flows” are a fail, so if I have to write in it, I just use the “Write (.md)” workflow, and ingore the rest. Overall, though, iA Writer Pro is a useful app in the editing process. Writing in the Writer Pro editor is pleasant, and the “Focus Mode” that highlights only the sentense you’re on is helpful. If iA Writer Pro wishes to be an app that is useful to would be, and established Novlests of prose, then it has to improve in iA Writer 3.

Premature Pilgrimage to El Capitan?

I find it unfortunate regarding the recent choice to abandon updates [for current owners] and compatibility [for new users] with previous versions of OS X. El Capitan is only five months old, as of this comment, and many users, myself included, are still choosing to wait longer to update from Yosemite, considering bugs and app compatibility issues remaining in OS X 10.11. I do love Writer, and will continue to use it, but I am sorry to see the chasm of obsolescence appear so quickly—and in my eyes, prematurely—between the product and my 15-month-old operating system.

Invisible when I write, helpful when I’m editing.

Update for 3.1.1: This remains the only app I use for creation. After that, it goes wherever I need it to for editing, formating, etc. Stunningly, the features added have not in any way changed the simplicity and focus of the writing experience. Beautifully thought out! I’ve had this app from the begenning and have always loved the writing as my writing app of choice, but reluctantly chose Scrivener because of how it handles files more smoothly. With iA Writer 3 that has all changed and is much improved while not getting in the way of the writing experience. iA Designs has done an amazing job blending the simplicity and power of it’s two apps into one with an exponential leap in user experience and file management witht he writing expereince remaining as wonderful as ever. Now, with tags and files and iCloud, I manage iA Writer files in Finder nearly as well as in Scrivener, including for longer/more complicated projects, and I get the sheer joy of writing in this deleciously invisible app and my writing is available on my iPhone seamlessly wherever I go. Thank you Iain and crew!

Best writing app that I ever have

iA is the only company that I know who really knows about typography. It makes me wanna to write something. Even a quick note.

Free apps with more functionality

Honestly I really wanted to like this app. I had heard so much about it that I went ahead and purchased it. Only problem is that I had used similar apps in the past that were offered for free. My expectations were kind of high with regards with iAWriter. Apps such as Mou and Macdown offer more functionality such as the ability to create your own output css styles in an easy fashion. As soon as I discovered my mistake purchasing the app I requested a refund (twice) never to receive one. So be careful before buying this feature lacking app.

A super clean distraction free Markdown tool

I have cranked out a great deal of documentation using this tool as a float from device to device based on my location. I like that I can create clean, readable, and exportable docs that can be edited anywhere I happened to be. I will sometimes create something on my Macbook that I don’t have time to fully review before running off to a flight. While at the airport in line I simply fire up my iPhone and review/edit right then and there. Something that is so much more difficult with other (more expensive) heavier tools. I can refine my thoughts without any worry of any kind as to the impact on the final rendering. This is thanks to the excellent support for Markdown and the ergonomics/design/philosohy the brilliant developers who created this tool implemented. Since installing it, I have zero issues of any kind and continue to push aside Office in favor of his tool for just about all documentation I create. A great tool for anyone who need to retain powerful formattig with a minimal of effort.

A tool—plain and simple

iA writer is like an old friend. I love being able to just dive in and write without being distracted by crowded toolbars. I also love the fact that there are only a few preferences that the user can set—another way to avoid distractions. The screen font is perfect, as is the printing font. I’ve also tried Ulysses, which I’m sure is good if you’re writing something long and complex. Have also tried Byword. Nothing rivals iA Writer.

Thinking About Style

I have to do a lot of writing for my work, mainly emails. I find that this app helps me to make certain that my writng is less static.

The Simple Writing App

It started out as a blank piece of digital paper, with faint pinstripes, a beautiful monospace typeface, and that beguiling blinking blue cursor. No settings, no distractions, just a tool for writing your thoughts in Markdown. It grew, gaining features with every new versions—things to simplify writing like keyboard shortcuts and lists that continue automatically, along with syntax control to point out when your writing had too many adjectives. It started managing all of your writing, first with a basic iCloud popover, later with an integrated document menu, and most recently with a quick open box to search through everything youve written. And, heretically, it both brought the file menu back on iOS and added a settings pane to its Mac version. Feature bloat, one could cry. Yet its not that at all. Every new feature is carefully added—and just as likely to be subtracted, if it doesnt make writing better. Syntax control used to be a distracting sidebar; now its relegated to a quiet spot in the footer, and lets you monitor every type of word you want at the same time. Its simple without being simplistic, an app that makes Markdown writing nice without hiding your markup. It just works. And thats the highest praise one can give an app that makes up such a significant chunk of their workday.

TOC for printed copy?

TOC to navigate is nice. How about a TOC for printed output?

Incredible.

By far the most useful and best app I have on my devices. I highly reccomend it.

Great, though the latest version has gotten a bit less minimal

iA Writer has really improved—though this latest version’s library has lost the previous minimal name-only view which makes the library way too hard to use for folders with lots of text documents. Could no previews please be added back as an optional view? Thanks—everything else is amazing, keep up the great work!

Best writing tool I know. Thanks for the update!

I’m so glad you came with this update. Now it’s working just how I visualised it was meant to. It is a really neat piece of software, and so far after the update, the bugs I experienced earlier are gone. Great job. Best writing tool I know.

Excellent, But Not My Cup of Tea

The developer is now fleshing out the application, making it one of the most powerful Markdown applications available. However, my personal typographical philosophy and preferred workflow clash with the developers viewpoint, making this not my favorite writing software. Im giving it full points anyway because, aside from my personal preferences, its an excellent piece of work, and many will find it right for them.

Pretty good, except for limits on text zooming.

The ability to zoom text is arbitrarily limited to one zoom level, which is not necessary and makes the program less usable for some people who have less-than-perfect vision.

Consistently Improving

Great app. My preferred app for markdown, surpassing Ulysses and the rest. Simple yet powerful. ALlows for finder integration in a way Ul. does not. Great support. How nice to open the newly updated app today to find changes for problematic functionality I’d just the other day noticed for the first time. This app is worth it.

Outstanding tool

This has become my go to program. I can take notes quickly on my phone or ipad at meetings, I can write manuscripts on the fly, and the focus is all on the words. The sync feature works beautifully. No fiddling with formatting. Now that it works with the papers app, I really won’t be using any other apps for writing.

A fantastic product.

This is a very simple app but that is what makes it greate becasue with all its features let me be way more productive than ever.
